The Grateful Dead was formed in 1965, By Jerry Garcia, Bill Kreutzmann, Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, and Ron Pigpen Mckernan. They are known as one of the most famous bands out of the Haight Asbury scene, representing the counterculture of American psychedelic rock. This sound would be featured on their earlier records like Anthem of the Sun, Aoxomoxoa. and Live Dead. They are often considered the 1st Jam band.

When the band started, the lead singer was Pigpen, and they were more blues-inspired. A band that was known for its eclectic sound and extended jams. Initially called the Warlocks, the band eventually renamed themselves the Grateful Dead.

After live Dead, the band moved in a more rootsy direction, emphasizing song structure and lyric writing. The following two releases were American Beauty and Workingman's Dead. It has been stated that when Rolling Stone Magazine heard the records in their office, they gave the albums a standing ovation. I can neither confirm nor deny that.

The grateful dead have never been known for selling albums. They were known as one of the greatest touring bands of all time, with sound and band members that were constantly changing, which led to the evolution of their sound.
